Portraiture, or photographing people, has been a part of my photographic practice since the very beginning. My first commission in 1989 was to photograph bands backstage at Reading Festival. Musicians and performers are excellent subjects to work with, as they are almost always show-offs, so this was a great first step for me.
Local bands and musicians followed and, before too long, I was photographing 'real' people as well. It can be harder to guess what 'normal' people want from a portrait, so I tend to employ a couple of tricks: I ask them, and I spend time with them. It becomes a collaboration, a conversation, rather than a picture of someone's face.
Is it harder work? Yes, it can be, but it's always very rewarding, and it's never boring.
I can't be doing with boring photographs. Can you?
