The pictures here were shot for an industry and academic research project into the repurposing of waste carbon fibre.
The CORE project, led by Dr Gary Weekes, aimed to build a fully-functioning racing K2 racing kayak, to be built by Kirton Kayaks, and use the craft to compete in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. This would become the first such craft to utilise recycled carbon fibre, a problematic waste product from the aerospace industry.
Although the team of Gary and colleague Liam Grover did not complete the race due to injury, the craft itself proved much more durable and was used in subsequent events.
